Train to Beijing

After Yi Chang, we took a 19-hour train overnight train ride to Beijing. We had "soft sleeper" tickets (ruanwo), which is better than "hard sleeper" (yingwo). In hard sleeper you are in a compartment with 6 bunks (3 and 3), there's little space for luggage, and we are told the beds are hard. In soft sleeper, there are four softish (by Chinese standards) beds in a compartment, and there's lots more storage space. Since there were four of us on the trip at this point, it was nice and private.

Early April is "Tomb Sweeping Day", a holiday in China where people go tend to the tombs of their ancestors. From the train, we saw several places where the tombs had been decorated this way:

We were very lucky with Cielo on this trip. She really didn't get fussy, and she slept really well. Here are Cielo and Vernon getting to know the compartment.

And here are Cielo and Alison being equally goofy.

Later, someone took a picture while they were asleep.
