Bakersfield

The last stop of our trip was at Bakersfield, California. But on the way there we stopped for more swimming in the Colorado River. This spot was a boat launch, camping and picnic area outside of Needles.

Eero gleefully stomping up out of the water.

For dinner in Bakersfield we went to Benji's French Basque restaurant. You picked an entree from the menu (or none) and with that came the "set up", which includes bread, "salsa" for the bread, cabbage soup, beans, green salad, pickled tongue, marinated tomato salad, French fries, and boiled carrots. It was so much food and variety we don't even remember what entree we had. Fortunately the waitress said what she does is just order the setup and she and her husband split an entree, so we followed her example.

And we had Baked Alaska for dessert - that's what Cielo is enjoying here.

"New owl" came with us from home (on the left), and Eero picked up two new owls on this trip. And of course Alison brought her sleeping pillow, Homer the Halibut.

We had a fancy breakfast at the hotel (which was a Sheraton - this note paper was left over from an earlier hotel). Cielo drew a nice picture of Vernon and herself.

Everyone was ready to be home - here are Eero and Cielo watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit? on the hotel cable.

Alison's birthday was the day after we got back. Cielo wrote this note and passed it up to Vernon in the front seat, and as soon as we got home, we went to the grocery store.
