Jerome and Kingman

After leaving Sedona, our next hotel was in Kingman, Arizona. But on the way we drove through Jerome, an almost ghost town in the mountains north and west of Sedona. Once a copper mining boom town of 15,000, it's now down to between three and four hundred people.

It is up on a mountain top (near the copper mines) so the views are great. Here are Alison, Eero and Cielo at the entrance to a local park.

These are the stairs down to the entrace to the Lincoln Gallery, inside The New State Motor Company building, which used to be both a car dealership and mechanic, and had an elevator inside for moving cars between the upper and lower floors. We have no idea what that big building in the background is, but it appears to be at the end of Upper Bell Road.

After Jerome, we figured we'd head to Kingman and find a rest stop or public park on the way - no such luck. Eventually we just pulled off of Highway 89 somewhere and made our own spot. Here's a picture of the family from the hood of our Scion.

Other than being incredibly hot, it wasn't a bad spot at all.

Then it was on to Kingman.

Kingman's Historic Route 66 Museum was interesting. It has both the history of the highway and information about how the various towns along Route 66 (but not on 40) managed to revive it as a tourist attraction.

Here's Eero looking at some of the museum. Eero wanted to go in and eat the fake food in the model diner - he was especially interested in that bubble gum machine.
